In South Australia, direct cremation typically costs $1,700–$4,500. A cremation with a simple service typically costs $3,450–$8,600, and a burial $10,650–$15,400 including director fees, cemetery costs, a standard coffin and a celebrant.
At Centennial Park in Adelaide, a 50-year grave right costs $4,950 and an adult burial fee is $2,760. A perpetual right costs $24,750, so the length of tenure you choose changes the total a great deal (FY26–27 fees).
A standard death certificate in South Australia costs $72.
It is paid to the state registry and isn't included in the estimate above.
The estimate adds up the funeral director's professional fees, a coffin, the crematorium fee or cemetery costs, and a celebrant for any funeral with a service. Flowers, catering, a viewing and livestreaming are optional extras you can switch on. A direct cremation with no service is a single package price.
After-hours transfer fees, a headstone or plaque, death notices and memorial booklets, and the death certificate fee are not in the total, because they depend on your circumstances. Each is shown as "may apply on top".
Cemetery and crematorium fees come from published fee schedules. Coffin, flower and professional-fee ranges come from funeral home price lists and industry cost reports, checked against each other. Every figure is a range, because providers price differently.Pricing data reviewed October 2026.

No, a formal funeral service is not legally required in Australia.
Yes, in a few ways. Some funeral providers offer payment plans directly. You can also set up a funeral bond, where you pay a deposit and make regular payments over time that can only go toward funeral costs, or a prepaid funeral plan, where you pay in full or over time for a set funeral.
Note that in most states, funeral directors must place prepaid funeral money into a registered fund for your protection, but the ACT, Northern Territory and Western Australia currently offer fewer protections, so it's worth checking the rules in your state before paying anything upfront.
Some pensioners, carers and family members may be eligible for a bereavement payment through Services Australia. Dependants may also be able to access a deceased person's superannuation early to help with funeral costs. It's worth checking eligibility directly with Centrelink or the relevant super fund before ruling this out.
