Prices vary by location — we'll tailor the numbers to your area.
Prices differ more by state than most people expect, mainly because crematorium and cemetery fees are set locally. Pick your state for figures and local detail.
Funeral costs depend mostly on three things: whether you choose cremation or burial, whether there is a service, and where you live.
A direct cremation with no service is the lowest-cost option and typically costs a few thousand dollars. A cremation with a simple service costs more because it adds a funeral director’s professional fees, a coffin, a celebrant and the crematorium fee. Burial is usually the most expensive choice because the cemetery charges separately for the grave and for the burial itself, and those fees are set by each cemetery.
For a national benchmark, the 2023 Australian Seniors Cost of Death report put the average cost of a burial at $11,039 and the average cremation at $8,045. Those are whole-funeral averages from survey data, so they sit above our direct cremation ranges and inside our burial ranges.
Every number it shows is a range, not a single figure, because real prices vary between providers. The total is always the sum of the line items listed beneath it, so nothing in the estimate is unexplained. Add or remove extras such as flowers or catering and the total changes straight away.
Some costs depend on your circumstances and are shown separately as “may apply on top”: after-hours transfer fees, a headstone or plaque, death notices and memorial booklets.
Cemetery fees come from each state’s own published fee schedules (for example Rookwood in Sydney, Brisbane City Council cemeteries, the Metropolitan Cemeteries Board in Perth, Centennial Park in Adelaide, Canberra Memorial Parks and Thorak Regional Cemetery near Darwin). Death certificate fees come from each state’s registry. Coffin, flower and professional-fee ranges come from published funeral home price lists and industry cost reports. Where little pricing is published, we say so on the state page rather than imply precision we don’t have.
